Drains are long tubes that can be placed in or around different organs. An abdominal drain, for example, is used to drain off extra fluid after an operation. A drain may also be placed in the chest. This will help drain fluid around the lungs or heart. Drains can also be used for the brain and limbs.
Drains can be seen hanging off the side of the bed or on the floor. Drains usually have a sack at the end of them to collect the fluid. The fluid will be measured every day in PICU.
We monitor all drains closely. Your child may need a little more pain relief while the drains are in. They may also need some extra pain relief when a drain is taken out. Drains can be removed in PICU or on the ward.
