Weakness

Children who are very unwell in PICU may become weak. We think this happens because of a combination of factors such as:

  • the illness itself
  • receiving less nutrition
  • being in bed for long periods of time
  • some medications

As children recover and move they will become stronger. It may be a little scary when your child begins to move out of the bed. Be assured that the nurses and physiotherapists will make sure this is done slowly and safely. You are encouraged to be involved as your child begins moving again. Your child's team will aim to make the process of getting moving again positive and fun for your child.
